Lieutenant General Michael T. Flynn is a retired U.S. Army intelligence officer who served for more than three decades. His career included senior commands in Iraq and Afghanistan, leadership of the Defense Intelligence Agency and service as National Security Advisor. His experience placed him at the center of modern conflict, where information, perception and technological influence can be as decisive as conventional force. Flynn has become a prominent voice on fifth-generation warfare, or 5GW. In this environment, narratives, social media, psychological operations, cyber capabilities and economic systems are used to shape human behaviour. The battlefield is no longer clearly defined, and ordinary citizens can become both targets and participants. This is the foundation of Flynn’s concept of “digital soldiers”: informed citizens who question narratives, verify information and use decentralized communication networks to defend truth. He argues that freedom cannot survive through passive observation; it requires education, discipline and personal responsibility. Flynn also recognized Bitcoin’s importance remarkably early. In 2015, he wrote: “BITCOIN: The rise of digital currency may be a matter of evolutionary destiny. Understand it because it will happen.” He later reinforced that message by urging people to understand the technology, warning that it would either become a system used to control society or a tool people could learn to control themselves. Bitcoin therefore fits within his broader 5GW framework: technological power must be understood before it becomes concentrated in the hands of centralized institutions. For Flynn, the rise of Bitcoin and digital citizens reflects the same historic transformation. Sovereignty will depend on people capable of defending their judgment, protecting their property and using emerging technologies to preserve freedom rather than surrender it.
